Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.” Then Samson reached toward the two central pillars on which the temple stood. Bracing himself against them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other, Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” Then he pushed with all his might, and down came the temple on the rulers and all the people in it. Thus he killed many more when he died than while he lived.

Judges 16:27-30

Devotional

Samson—the strong guy with the hair. He got trapped by a sneaky woman, and he gave his life to bring down the Philistines and their temple. That is the Hollywood portrayal of a love-struck, martyred hero.

But have we REALLY read Judges 13-16? I am not a fan of this particular Samson! He’s a manipulative, self-indulgent bully. He does wild things. He ties foxes’ tails together and sets them on fire. He tells riddles, makes wagers, misuses women, and seeks constant revenge. He speaks flippantly to the Lord and to everyone else. He would not be MY choice for a ruler.

In a recent sermon, Rich told us, “If you’re looking for nuggets of inspiration from the book of Judges, you may be disappointed.” Historically, this time was a bloody era in Israel’s story when the Philistines ruled over them. And Israel didn’t need a peace-keeping judge (Samson ruled for twenty years); they needed a savior. We might not categorize Samson as a wise ruler. But in the hands of God, he became a protector and deliverer.

None of us can measure up to the wisdom and patience we seek in a leader chosen by God. But God has chosen us for good in this world, and He blesses each of us for a purpose. Rely on God’s wisdom and trust His way of shaping you for this world in need.

For Reflection

Where did God shape you this week? Was it uncomfortable?

Have you seen other “imperfect” leaders who were chosen for good moments?

Prayer

Oh God, my flaws are laid before me every day. But I believe You made me for a purpose. So on this day I seek Your wisdom, Your strength, and Your equipping me to do good things in this world, ready for your calling. I am the only one who can do the things You made me for. So help me get up and move into the world with confidence in Your presence. Amen.
