Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:

I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.
The Lord is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.
The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name.
Pharaoh’s chariots and his army he has hurled into the sea.
The best of Pharaoh’s officers are drowned in the Red Sea.
The deep waters have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone.
Your right hand, Lord, was majestic in power.
Your right hand, Lord, shattered the enemy.

Exodus 15:1-6

Devotional

I would sing, too, if I witnessed such an event as crossing the Red Sea!

This passage is known as “The Song of Moses and Miriam,” when all of Israel erupts in a cry of rejoicing to God. There are other examples of “rejoicing songs” like this one throughout scripture:

  • The Song of Hannah (1 Samuel 2:1-10)
  • David’s song of Praise (2 Samuel 22)
  • The Song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55, also called The Magnificat)
  • The Song of Zechariah (Luke 1:67-79)
  • The Song of the Lamb (Revelation 5:9-10)

These songs proclaim that where something seemed impossible, God has shown His strength and made a way. They serve as a witness to God’s greatness and glory, which can only be proclaimed by harnessing the zenith-strength of voice, strength of breath, and the power of the Holy Spirit.

Read this passage aloud for yourself and think about the week you are experiencing right now. Think of moments in which you faced an impediment, and then suddenly a way was made clear. (It happens ALL THE TIME.) Then read this passage aloud again and see God revealed as your strength and defense, your salvation. Give thanks to Him for those solutions you never thought possible. Rejoice in His actions through your life and in the lives of those around you. As Paul proclaimed to the church in Colossae:

For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (Colossians 1:16-17)

For Reflection

Where have I seen God making a way when I couldn’t see a way?

How can I be a witness to God’s great power?

Prayer

Almighty God, You are working in my life and in the lives of others around me. Open my eyes to Your works and my heart to Your care. Draw me so close to You that I can see Your works and share my joy with a hungry world. Amen.
